Ketosis: If the diet is changed from one that is high in carbohydrates to one that does not provide sufficient carbohydrate to replenish glycogen stores, the body goes through a set of stages to enter ketosis. During the initial stages of this process, blood glucose levels are maintained through gluconeogenesis, and the adult brain does not burn ketones. However, the brain makes immediate use of ketones for lipid synthesis in the brain. After about 48 hours of this process, the brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly use the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, thus avoiding the depletion of the body's protein store in the muscles.
Before I got married I was on a strict diet called Prism. It actually had a very good outcome for me, I lost a ton of weight when I first started. But every time I entered a new stage which would add in another food group, I would pack on weight. Then after the wedding I stopped my mean diet and ate what I wanted. This has resulted in me being the heaviest I have ever been. And I'm starting to feel uncomfortable.
At just 5ft nothin', 10lbs looks like a lot more on me than most people. So when I begin to gain weight, it looks a lot more severe on my tiny frame. So I am ready and willing to make a full lifestyle change! A change for the better and for a sustainable, healthy weight.
I decided to do some research instead of following someone else's rules or a strict diet. I wanted to know why my body reacted to certain foods the way it did. And even more simply; what is a carbohydrate? Well... it's just sugar basically. So if you're a carb and sugar freak like I am, you're going to pack on the pounds because that's what you decide to stuff your face with.
During my research I looked up what would be a good lifestyle change for me (lifestyle, not diet) and low-carb started popping up everywhere I looked. Then the word Ketosis popped up. I wanted to know exactly why someone would lower their carbs. Putting your body in a state of Ketosis will result in weightloss because instead of your body using your carbs for energy, it burns fat. So I went in to looking at my possibilities of meals. Cutting out complex carbs, lowering carbs and entering my meals into a spreadsheet everyday seemed easy enough. In fact, I was READY to this!
But as weird as it might sound, we have been a little too poor to eat healthy. Too poor to eat healthy? Yes. Because all we ever have in the house is pasta, breads and beans, thankfully provided by our local food bank. Being out of work and the way the economy has been treating us, we haven't had the money to grocery shop in a while. And for a bit there, we didn't have enough money to buy any fresh fruits or veggies. So I've actually had to wait to start my lifestyle change.
But now that I'm working again and my husband has finished his schooling and getting his licensing, things seem to be back on track. All in one week! So I'm excited to get this thing started!
And I just have to keep telling myself... This isn't a diet; it's a lifestyle change.
